What is a domain?
A domain is the name of a website, like example.com. People type it into a browser to find you.
What is an addon domain?
An addon domain is a second, separate website on the same hosting account. It has its own folder and its own files. Visitors see its own content.
Think of a building with two shops. Each shop has its own door and its own goods. The building is your hosting account.
What is a parked domain?
A parked domain is an extra name for a website you already have. It shows the same content as your main site. In cPanel it is also called an alias.
Think of one shop with two signs above the door. Both signs lead into the same shop.
Side by side
| Question | Addon domain | Parked domain |
|---|---|---|
| Shows different content? | Yes | No, same as the main site |
| Has its own folder? | Yes | No |
| Good for | A second website | Another spelling or extension of your name |
How to add one in cPanel
- Log in to your client area and open cPanel.
- Click Domains. On older cPanel versions, look for Addon Domains or Aliases.
- Click Create A New Domain.
- Type the domain name.
- For an addon domain, leave the box Share document root unticked. Then cPanel makes a separate folder.
- For a parked (alias) domain, tick Share document root. Then it uses your main site's folder.
- Click Submit.
The domain must also point to Hostvento. You do this by setting its nameservers at the place where you bought it. Your welcome email lists the nameservers to use.
Quick recap
- Addon domain: a separate website with its own folder.
- Parked domain: another name for the same website.
- In new cPanel, both are made on the Domains page.
- Point the domain's nameservers to Hostvento so it works.
