How a Domain Transfer Works, Step by Step

This guide explains how to move a domain from one registrar to another, and what to expect along the way.

What is a domain transfer?

A registrar is a company that sells and manages domain names. A transfer moves the management of your domain from one registrar to another. It is like moving your phone number to a new phone company. The number stays the same. A transfer does not move your website files.

Before you start

  • The domain should be older than 60 days. Many extensions block transfers soon after registration.
  • Do not start within 60 days of a change of owner details, as this can also block it.
  • Make sure the domain has not expired.
  • Your contact email at the old registrar must work, because approval mail goes there.

Steps

  1. Log in to the account at your current registrar.
  2. Turn off Domain Lock (also called Registrar Lock). This lock stops others from moving your domain by mistake.
  3. Turn off domain privacy if the old registrar needs it off to show your real email.
  4. Ask for the authorization code. It is also called an EPP code or auth code. It works like a password for the transfer.
  5. Log in to your Hostvento client area.
  6. Open the Domains menu and choose the option to transfer a domain.
  7. Type the domain name and click to continue.
  8. Enter the authorization code when asked.
  9. Check the order and pay any transfer fee that is shown. The fee depends on your domain extension.
  10. Watch your email. The old registrar may send a message asking you to approve the transfer. Click the approve link.
  11. Wait. A transfer can take from a few hours to about seven days.

Keep your website running

Do not change your nameservers during the transfer unless you plan to. If you do not touch them, your site and mail stay online. Copy your DNS records somewhere safe before you start.

If something goes wrong

  • Wrong code: ask for a new one.
  • Domain locked: unlock it and try again.
  • No approval mail: check the spam folder and the contact email.

If you stay stuck, open a support ticket.

Tip: Start well before your expiry date. Transfers take time.

Quick recap

  • A transfer moves domain management, not website files.
  • Unlock the domain and get the auth code.
  • Start the transfer in your client area under Domains.
  • Approve the email and wait a few days.
