What is a parked domain?
A domain is the name of a website, like example.com. Parking a domain gives it a second name. It is like a house with two street signs. Both signs lead to the same house.
People also use "park" for a name that is bought but not used yet. In cPanel, newer versions call the first kind an alias.
Before you start
- Own the domain you want to park.
- Point its name servers to Hostvento. Name servers are like a signpost that sends visitors to the right server. Find them in your welcome email.
Steps
- Log in to the client area.
- Open Services and choose your hosting.
- Log in to cPanel.
- Open Domains. Older versions show Aliases or Parked Domains.
- Click Create A New Domain. In older versions, type the name in the box and click Add Domain.
- Type the domain you want to park.
- Turn on the option to share the document root of your main domain. The document root is the folder where the website files live.
- Click Submit.
The parked name now shows the same site as the main domain.
Do you want a redirect?
By default, the visitor keeps the parked name in the address bar. If you want everyone to end up on your main name, set a redirect. In cPanel, open Redirects and add one from the parked name to the main one. A redirect is like a sign saying "we moved, go here".
If you only want to hold the name
Keep the name registered and renew it on time. You do not need hosting for that. Just do not set a website for it.
Check it works
Wait for DNS to spread. This can take a few hours. Then open the parked name in your browser.
Quick recap
- A parked domain (alias) shows the same site under another name.
- Point its name servers to Hostvento first.
- Add it in cPanel under Domains.
- Use a redirect if you want one single address.
