What does this change?
A hosting service in the client area is linked to a domain, which is the name of your website, like example.com. If you want to use a new name, you can ask for the service to be updated. This is different from moving a domain to a new registrar, and different from renewing a domain.
The exact options depend on your product type. Some services show a change domain button. Others need support to do it.
Before you start
- Register the new domain, or have it ready.
- Back up your website and email. A backup is a spare copy you can restore if something goes wrong.
- Know that changing the main domain on a hosting account can change the cPanel username folder paths, links and email addresses. Plan for this.
Steps
- Go to https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php and log in.
- Click the Services menu, then My Services.
- Click the hosting service you want to change.
- Look at the actions on the page for a button like Change Domain or Update Domain.
- If you see it, type the new domain name and confirm.
- If you do not see it, open a support ticket. Go to https://secure.hostvento.com/submitticket.php.
- In the ticket, write your current domain, the new domain and the service name.
Point the new domain to your hosting
- Log in to where the new domain is registered.
- Set its nameservers to the ones in your welcome email. Nameservers are like a signpost that sends visitors to the right server.
- Wait some hours for the change to spread.
After the change
- Check that the website opens on the new name.
- If you use WordPress, update the site address in Settings then General.
- Create the email accounts again on the new domain, if needed.
- Set up a redirect from the old name to the new one, so old links still work.
Tip: If you only want a second name for the same site, add an alias or addon domain instead of changing the main one.
Quick recap
- Back up first, then open your service under Services.
- Use the change domain option if shown. If not, open a ticket.
- Point the new domain's nameservers to your hosting.
- Update links, email and redirects after the change.
