How to Check Your Domain's Expiration Date

This guide shows two easy ways to find out when your domain name runs out, so you can renew it in time.

Domains and DNS2 min read8 steps

Why does this matter?

A domain is your website's name, like example.com. You rent it for a set time. The day it ends is the expiration date. If you forget to renew, your website and email on that name can stop working.

Method 1: Use the Hostvento client area

Use this if your domain is registered with Hostvento.

  1. Go to https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php and log in.
  2. Click the Domains menu.
  3. Click My Domains.
  4. Look at the list. Each domain shows a registration date and a Next Due Date or expiry date.
  5. For more details, click Manage Domain on that row.

The date is the end of your current period.

Method 2: Use a WHOIS lookup

WHOIS is a public record of who registered a domain and when it ends. Use this for any domain, even one at another company.

  1. Open a WHOIS lookup tool in your browser.
  2. Type your domain name and search.
  3. Find the line named Registry Expiry Date or Expiration Date.

You can also use the command line on Mac or Linux:

whois example.com

This prints the public record. Look for the expiry line in the output.

Which date is right?

Sometimes the registrar shows a different date from WHOIS. The reasons are time zones and small system delays. Plan to renew before the earlier date.

What to do next

  • Renew a few weeks before the date. The guide on renewing a domain tells you how.
  • Put a reminder in your phone calendar.
  • Keep your contact email correct so reminders reach you.
Tip: Some privacy settings hide your name in WHOIS, but the expiry date still shows.

If the date looks wrong, open a ticket at https://secure.hostvento.com/submitticket.php.

Quick recap

  • The expiration date is when your domain rental ends.
  • Check it in the client area under Domains then My Domains.
  • Or use a WHOIS lookup for any domain.
  • Renew early and set a reminder.
