How to Find the Folder Path of an Addon Domain in cPanel

This guide shows where the files of an addon domain live on your hosting account.

What is an addon domain?

An addon domain is an extra website name added to one hosting account. You can run several websites from one plan this way. Each addon domain has its own folder for its files.

That folder is called the document root. It is the place where the website's files must go for visitors to see them. The path is the full address of that folder on the server. It looks like /home/username/example.com.

You may need the path to upload files, to set up a script or to fix an error.

Steps

  1. Log in to the client area.
  2. Open Services, then My Services, and choose your hosting plan.
  3. Log in to cPanel from there. cPanel is the control panel for your hosting.
  4. In the search box at the top, type Domains.
  5. Click Domains. Newer cPanel versions show all your domains here. Older versions use an icon called Addon Domains.
  6. Find your addon domain in the list.
  7. Look at the column named Document Root. It shows the folder, such as public_html/example.com or example.com.

Turn it into the full path

The list often shows a short path. It is relative to your home folder. Your home folder is the main folder of your account. To get the full path, add your home folder in front.

  1. Open File Manager in cPanel.
  2. Look at the folder tree on the left. Your home folder is at the top.
  3. Click the addon domain's folder. The path shows in the bar at the top of the page.

The home folder is usually /home/ followed by your cPanel username. The full path then looks like /home/username/public_html/example.com.

Change the folder

You can edit the document root on the same Domains page. Click Manage next to the domain and update the field. Take a backup first. A wrong path can make the site go blank.

Tip: To see the path from a PHP file, you can use echo __DIR__;. It prints the folder that file sits in.
