What is a DNS zone?
DNS is like a phone book for the internet. It turns a website name into a number that computers understand. A DNS zone is one page of that phone book. It holds all the entries for your domain.
Each entry is called a record. An A record points your domain to a server address. A CNAME record points one name to another name. An MX record tells the world where your email lives.
UOL is a Brazilian company that sells domains and hosting. Its panel can change over time. If a menu name below looks different, look for words like "Domains" or "DNS".
Before you start
- Have your UOL login details ready.
- Find the new values you need. For Hostvento hosting, they are in your welcome email. You can also ask Hostvento support.
- Write down your old records first. A wrong change can take your site or email offline.
Steps
- Log in to your UOL account.
- Open the section for your domains. It is often named Domínios or Domains.
- Click the domain you want to change.
- Look for an option named DNS, Zona DNS or Advanced settings, and open it.
- You will see a list of records. Take a screenshot of it as a backup.
- To add a record, click the add button. Choose the type, such as A or CNAME.
- Fill in the name, the value and the TTL. The TTL is how long, in seconds, the world may remember the record before asking again.
- To change a record, click edit next to it. Type the new value.
- Click Save.
Using Hostvento nameservers instead
Another way is to change the nameservers. Nameservers are the computers that hold your DNS zone. If you set Hostvento nameservers at UOL, you then manage the records inside your Hostvento account. Your welcome email lists the nameserver names.
If something goes wrong
Put back the old records you saved. If the site still does not load, open a ticket at https://secure.hostvento.com/submitticket.php.
Quick recap
- A DNS zone is the list of records for your domain.
- Log in to UOL, open your domain, then open its DNS settings.
- Save a copy of the old records before you change anything.
- Add or edit records, then click Save.
- Wait for propagation before you test.
