What is a DNS zone?
DNS is like a phone book for the internet. It turns a website name into a number that computers understand. Your DNS zone is the page in that phone book that belongs to your domain.
The page is made of records. An A record connects your domain to a server address. A CNAME record connects a name to another name. An MX record sends your email to the right place. A TXT record holds notes, such as proof that you own the domain.
Web.com is a company where you can buy domains. Its screens can change. If a name below is different, look for similar words.
Before you start
- Keep your Web.com username and password close.
- Get the new values from your Hostvento welcome email, or ask Hostvento support.
- Copy your current records somewhere safe. A wrong edit can break your website or email.
Steps
- Sign in to your Web.com account.
- Go to your list of domains. Look for My Domains or Domains.
- Click the name of the domain you want to edit.
- Find DNS, Manage DNS or Advanced DNS. Open it.
- Read the table of records. Take a screenshot to keep the old values.
- Click the button to add a record. Pick the type.
- Type the host (the name part), the value, and the TTL. TTL means how many seconds others may remember the record.
- To change a record that already exists, click its edit icon and type the new value.
- Click Save.
Changing nameservers instead
Nameservers are the computers that answer questions about your domain. If you change them to Hostvento nameservers, the DNS zone is then managed in your Hostvento account. Your welcome email lists them. Do not guess the names.
Waiting for the change
New records need time to spread across the internet. This is called propagation. It can take a few minutes, and sometimes up to a day or more. Test your site after a while.
