What is a DNS zone?
DNS is like a phone book for the internet. It turns a website name into a number that computers understand. The DNS zone is the part of the phone book for your own domain.
It is made of records. An A record points your domain to a server address. A CNAME record points a name to another name. An MX record tells the world where to deliver your email. A TXT record stores a short note, often used to prove who owns the domain.
Wix is a website builder that also sells domains. Its screens change from time to time. If a label is different, look for a similar word.
Before you start
- Log in as the owner of the Wix account that holds the domain.
- Get the values to enter from your Hostvento welcome email, or ask Hostvento support.
- Note down what is there now. A mistake can bring your site or email down.
Steps
- Log in to your Wix account.
- Open the Domains page. You can find it from your account menu.
- Next to your domain, click the three dots or the Manage button.
- Choose Advanced and then Edit DNS Records. The exact wording can vary.
- You will see boxes for A, CNAME, MX and TXT records.
- Take a screenshot of the current records.
- To change a record, click the pencil icon next to it. Type the new value.
- To add a record, click + Add Record in the right box.
- Fill in the host name, the value, and the TTL. TTL tells others how long they may remember the record.
- Click Save.
How long does it take?
A change must spread over the internet. This is called propagation. It can take a few minutes. Sometimes it takes a day or more.
