What is a DNS zone?
DNS is like a phone book for the internet. It turns a website name into a number that computers understand. The DNS zone is your domain's own page in that phone book.
It is made of records. An A record points your domain to a server address. A CNAME record points a name to another name. An MX record tells the world where to send your email. A TXT record holds a short note.
Hover is a company that sells domain names. Its screens can change over time. If a label below is different, look for a similar word.
Before you start
- Have your Hover login ready.
- Get the values to enter from your Hostvento welcome email, or ask Hostvento support.
- Copy down your current records. A wrong value can take your site or email offline.
Steps
- Go to the Hover website and sign in.
- On your account page, click the domain you want to edit.
- Open the DNS tab.
- Look at the list of records. Take a screenshot of it.
- To change a record, click Edit next to it.
- Type the new value in the box.
- To add a new record, click Add a record.
- Pick the type, then enter the host name, the value, and the TTL. TTL is how long, in seconds, others may remember the record.
- Click Save or Add record.
Using nameservers instead
Nameservers are the computers that hold your DNS zone. If you move them to Hostvento, then DNS is managed in your Hostvento account. On Hover, look for the Nameservers section on the domain's page. Use the names from your welcome email.
Waiting for the change
A DNS change needs time to reach everyone. This is called propagation. It may take minutes. It may take a day or more.
