What is WooCommerce?
WordPress is a tool for building websites. WooCommerce is a free add-on for it. An add-on is called a plugin. WooCommerce turns your website into a shop with products, a cart and a checkout.
A product is anything you sell, such as a book or a T-shirt. You can also sell digital files.
Before you start
- Install and activate the WooCommerce plugin in your WordPress dashboard.
- Log in to your WordPress dashboard as an administrator.
- Have a clear photo of the product and a short description.
Add a product
- In the dashboard menu, click Products.
- Click Add New.
- Type the product name at the top.
- Write a description in the big text box.
- Scroll to the Product data box. Keep the type as Simple product for one item with no choices.
- Under General, type the Regular price. You can add a Sale price if you like.
- Open the Inventory tab. Type a SKU if you use one. A SKU is a short code that names the product. Tick Manage stock to count how many are left.
- Click Set product image and upload your photo.
- On the right, pick or create a Product category. A category is a group, like "Shoes".
- Click Publish.
Change or remove a product
- Go to Products and then All Products.
- Hover over a product and click Edit. Change what you need, then click Update.
- For a quick change of price or stock, use Quick Edit under the name.
- To remove a product, click Trash. It moves to the Trash list, where you can restore it.
Tip: Emptying the Trash deletes products for good. Take a backup of your site first if you are not sure.
Other useful things
- Use Import and Export at the top of the product list to move many products using a CSV file. A CSV file is a simple table of data.
- Set a product to Draft to hide it without deleting it.
