How to Point Your Domain to Blogger

This guide shows you how to make your own domain name open your Blogger blog. You do this with a few DNS records.

Domains and DNS2 min read10 steps

What does "point a domain" mean?

A domain is your website's address. DNS is like a phone book for the internet. It turns that address into a number that computers understand. Pointing a domain means telling the phone book to send visitors to Blogger.

Blogger is Google's free blogging service. Your blog starts with an address like yourname.blogspot.com. You can swap it for your own domain.

You will add records in your domain's DNS zone. This is wherever your nameservers point. If your domain uses Hostvento nameservers, edit the zone in your Hostvento account. Log in at https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php.

Steps

  1. Log in to Blogger and open your blog.
  2. Click Settings in the left menu.
  3. Find Publishing and click Custom domain.
  4. Type your domain with www at the front, for example www.example.com. Click Save.
  5. Blogger shows an error with two items. The first is a CNAME name and value, for example www pointing to ghs.google.com. The second is a longer pair of random text.
  6. Copy both pairs exactly. Do not change any letters.
  7. Open the DNS zone editor for your domain.
  8. Add a CNAME record. A CNAME record points one name to another name. Use host www and the value ghs.google.com.
  9. Add the second CNAME record with the long random name and value from Blogger.
  10. Save. Wait some time, then go back to Blogger and click Save again.

Make the bare domain work too

The "bare" domain is example.com with no www. Add four A records for the root name. An A record points a name to a number address. Blogger's documented addresses are:

216.239.32.21
216.239.34.21
216.239.36.21
216.239.38.21

Blogger may change these, so check its help page before you copy them. Then, in Blogger, turn on Redirect example.com to www.example.com.

Tip: Do not keep old A records for the root name. They may send visitors to a hosting site instead of Blogger.

Changes can take up to a day to spread. If you need help, open a ticket at https://secure.hostvento.com/submitticket.php.
