What does "point a domain" mean?
A domain is your website's address. DNS is like a phone book for the internet. It turns that address into a number that computers understand. Pointing a domain means telling the phone book to send visitors to your Canva site.
Canva is a design tool. It can also publish simple one-page or multi-page websites. Your Canva site starts with a Canva address. You can swap it for your own domain.
Before you start
- Publish your website in Canva first.
- Check that your Canva plan allows a custom domain. Ask Canva if you are not sure. Hostvento does not know your Canva plan.
- Know where your domain's DNS zone is edited. If the nameservers are Hostvento's, log in at https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php.
Steps
- Open your design in Canva.
- Click Share, then Website, then open the website settings.
- Choose Connect domain or Use a domain you already own.
- Type your domain name.
- Canva shows the records you must add. They are usually an A record for the root domain and a CNAME record for www. Copy the values exactly from Canva, because they can change.
- Open the DNS zone editor for your domain.
- Remove old A or CNAME records for the same names. They may point to your old site.
- Add the A record. An A record points a name to a number address. Use host
@, which means the bare domain. - Add the CNAME record. A CNAME record points one name to another name. Use host
www. - Save, then go back to Canva and click Verify or Connect.
How long it takes
Changes spread slowly. This is called propagation. It may take a few minutes or up to a day or more. Canva also needs time to set up a security certificate for your domain.
