How to Point Your Domain to Odoo

This guide shows you how to make your own domain open an Odoo website. You add a DNS record and then tell Odoo about the domain.

What does "point a domain" mean?

A domain is your website's address. DNS is like a phone book for the internet. It turns that address into a number that computers understand. Pointing a domain means telling the phone book to send visitors to your Odoo site.

Odoo is a business software suite. It includes a website builder and an online shop. Its cloud version gives you an address such as yourcompany.odoo.com. You can swap it for your own domain.

Before you start

  • Log in to your Odoo database as an administrator.
  • Know where your domain's DNS is edited. If the nameservers are Hostvento's, log in at https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php.
  • Save your current DNS records. A wrong change can break your site or email.

Steps

  1. Open your DNS zone editor for the domain.
  2. Pick the name you want to use. A subdomain such as www is the easiest.
  3. Add a CNAME record. A CNAME record points one name to another name. Use host www.
  4. For the value, type your Odoo address, for example yourcompany.odoo.com. Use your real one.
  5. Save the record.
  6. In Odoo, open the Website app.
  7. Go to Configuration and then Settings.
  8. Find the Domain field and type your domain, for example www.example.com.
  9. Click Save.
  10. If you use Odoo Online, also open the Odoo.com account and use the Domain names section if it is shown. This step lets Odoo accept requests for your domain.

Odoo menus change between versions. If a name is different, look for "Domain" in the website settings.

The bare domain

The bare domain is example.com with no www. A CNAME cannot be used there on most DNS services. Instead, set a redirect from the bare domain to www at your registrar. A redirect sends visitors from one address to another.

Tip: Leave your MX records alone. They control your email.

Wait and test

Changes spread slowly. This is called propagation. It can take a few minutes or a day or more. If needed, open a ticket at https://secure.hostvento.com/submitticket.php.

Quick recap

  • Add a CNAME from www to your Odoo address.
  • Type the domain in Odoo website settings and save.
  • Redirect the bare domain to www.
  • Do not change MX records.
  • Wait for propagation.
