What does "point a domain" mean?
A domain is your website's address. DNS is like a phone book for the internet. It turns that address into a number that computers understand. Pointing a domain means telling the phone book to send visitors to your Tilda site.
Tilda is a website builder. Your site starts with a Tilda address. To use your own domain, you need a Tilda plan that allows it. Check this on the Tilda site. Hostvento cannot tell you what your plan allows.
Before you start
- Log in to Tilda and open your project.
- Know where your DNS is edited. If your nameservers are Hostvento's, log in at https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php.
- Save your current DNS records. A wrong change can break your site or email.
Steps
- In Tilda, open Site Settings for your project.
- Click Domain.
- Type your domain name. Use the www form if you can, for example
www.example.com. - Click Save. Tilda shows the DNS records it needs. Keep this page open and copy the values exactly.
- Open the DNS zone editor for your domain.
- Delete any older A record for the bare domain (host
@) that points somewhere else. - Add an A record for
@with the IP address shown by Tilda. An A record points a name to a number address. - Add a CNAME record for
wwwwith the value shown by Tilda. A CNAME record points one name to another name. - Save your DNS changes.
- Return to Tilda and click the button to check the domain. Then publish your pages again.
Keep your email working
Do not edit MX records. They tell the world where your email lives.
Waiting time
DNS changes spread slowly. This is called propagation. It takes minutes, or up to a day or more.
If you need help, open a ticket at https://secure.hostvento.com/submitticket.php.
Quick recap
- Enter your domain in Tilda Site Settings, then Domain.
- Copy the records Tilda shows.
- Add the A record and the www CNAME in your DNS zone.
- Republish your pages.
- Wait for propagation.
