What does "point a domain" mean?
A domain is your website's address. DNS is like a phone book for the internet. It turns that address into a number that computers understand. Pointing a domain means telling the phone book to send visitors to your Wix site.
Wix is a website builder. Your site starts with a Wix address. To use your own domain, you need a Wix plan that allows a custom domain. Check this in your Wix account.
Before you start
- Log in to Wix and open your site dashboard.
- Know where your DNS is edited. If your domain is registered with Hostvento, log in at https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php.
- Save your current DNS records. A wrong change can break your site or email.
Method 1: point with records
This keeps your DNS where it is.
- In your Wix dashboard, open Settings and then Domains.
- Click Connect a domain you already own.
- Type your domain name and click Connect.
- Choose Connect by pointing, if Wix gives you the choice.
- Wix shows an A record and a CNAME record to add. Copy the values exactly.
- Open the DNS zone editor for your domain.
- Edit the A record with host
@and set the value Wix gave you. An A record points a name to a number address. - Edit the CNAME record with host
wwwand set the value Wix gave you. A CNAME record points one name to another name. - Save. Return to Wix and click Verify.
Method 2: change nameservers
Nameservers are the computers that answer questions about your domain. This gives Wix control of your DNS.
- Choose Connect by changing nameservers in Wix.
- Copy the two nameservers it shows.
- Where the domain is registered, open the nameserver settings and paste them in.
- Save.
Waiting time
DNS changes spread slowly. This is called propagation. It may take minutes, or up to a day or more.
