This guide walks you through moving a domain name from GoDaddy to Hostvento.

What is a domain transfer?

A domain is your website's name, like example.com. A registrar is the company that manages that name for you. A transfer moves the name from one registrar to another. Your website does not move. Only the management of the name moves.

Before you start

  • The domain must be at least 60 days old. This is a common rule for all registrars.
  • If you changed the owner details or transferred recently, there may be a 60 day wait.
  • Make sure your email on the domain record is correct. You may get emails to approve the move.
  • Do not let the domain expire during the transfer.
Warning: Write down your current DNS records first. If the DNS changes during the move, your site or email could stop working.

Steps at GoDaddy

  1. Log in to your GoDaddy account.
  2. Open your list of domains and click the one you want to move.
  3. Turn off Domain Lock. The lock stops others from stealing your domain.
  4. Turn off any Domain Privacy if it blocks the transfer email.
  5. Click the option to get the authorization code. It is also called an EPP code or transfer key. It works like a secret password for the transfer.
  6. Copy the code. GoDaddy may also email it to you.

Steps at Hostvento

  1. Log in to your client area.
  2. Open the Domains menu and look for the transfer option, such as Transfer a Domain.
  3. Type your domain name and click the button to check it.
  4. Paste in the authorization code when asked.
  5. Follow the order steps and pay any amount shown on screen.
  6. Check your email. You may get a message asking you to approve the transfer. Approve it.

What happens next?

A transfer usually takes a few days. You can watch it in Domains, then My Domains. When it finishes, you manage the name in your Hostvento account.

If it gets stuck, open a support ticket.

Tip: Keep your website running at its old host during the move. Then change settings later.

Quick recap

  • A transfer moves the domain's management, not your website.
  • Unlock the domain and get the authorization code at GoDaddy.
  • Start the transfer in your Hostvento client area and paste the code.
  • Approve any email and wait a few days.
