What are these domains?
cPanel is a control panel. That is a web page where you manage hosting. An addon domain is an extra domain with its own website and its own folder, hosted in the same account. A parked domain, now often called an alias, is an extra name that shows the same site as your main domain. It is like two name tags on one door.
Common reasons it fails
- The domain is already on the server. It may exist in another account.
- The domain does not point to us yet. Some servers need the nameservers to be set first.
- You reached your limit. Your plan may allow only a set number of addon domains.
- A typing mistake. Extra spaces,
http://orwwwin the box can cause errors. - The folder name is already used. The document root cannot be one that exists for another domain.
- The domain is a subdomain of your own domain. That needs the subdomain tool instead.
Steps to fix it
- Log in to cPanel. Your login details are in your welcome email.
- Open Domains. On older versions, open Addon Domains or Parked Domains.
- Check the list. Make sure the domain is not already added.
- Type the domain name only, like
example.com. Do not addhttp://orwww. - Look at the folder box. Choose a new folder name that is not in use.
- Click Add Domain.
- Read any error message. It often names the reason.
If the message says the domain already exists
Another account on the server may have it. Only one account can hold a domain at a time. Ask the owner to remove it. Or open a support ticket so the team can check.
If you reached the limit
Check your plan details in the client area under Services. Support can tell you what your plan allows.
If it was added but the site does not load
Point the domain's nameservers to your hosting. Your welcome email has them. Wait up to 48 hours.
Quick recap
- An addon domain has its own site. A parked domain shows the main site.
- Failures come from duplicates, limits, typos or DNS.
- Enter the plain domain name only.
- Use a fresh folder name.
- Send the error text to support if you are stuck.
