SpamExperts Outgoing Filter: A Quick Setup Guide

This guide explains the idea of the SpamExperts outgoing filter and the main steps to route your outgoing email through it. Ask Hostvento support whether it is on your plan.

What is SpamExperts?

SpamExperts is a third-party email filtering service. A filter checks emails and blocks the bad ones. Incoming filtering checks mail sent to you. Outgoing filtering checks mail sent from you. It makes sure your server is not sending spam. This protects your name and helps your emails reach inboxes.

Not every hosting plan includes it. Support can tell you if it is available to you, and give the exact server names to use.

Why filter outgoing mail?

If one email account is hacked, it can send thousands of spam messages. Your server's IP address may then be put on a blocklist. A blocklist is a public list of senders that others do not trust. Outgoing filtering helps stop this.

What you need

  • Your domain added to the SpamExperts service. Support or your control panel does this.
  • The outgoing filter hostname and port. Your welcome email or support gives these. We do not list them here.
  • Access to your mail server, or to the mail program on your computer.

Option 1: Server-wide smarthost

A smarthost is a middleman. Your server hands outgoing mail to it, and it forwards the mail after checking. This option is for server owners with root access.

  1. Log in to your control panel as the server administrator. In WHM, search for Exim Configuration Manager.
  2. Open the Basic Editor.
  3. Find Smarthost support, also called Route outgoing mail through.
  4. Enter the outgoing filter hostname you were given.
  5. Save the settings.
Warning: A wrong smarthost can stop all outgoing mail. Write down the old value before you change it. Send a test email afterwards.

Option 2: Per-user login

Some setups ask each email user to log in to the filter with their own username and password. In that case, set your mail program's outgoing server (SMTP) to the filter hostname and port from support. Use the mail account login you were given.

Test it

  1. Send an email to a free mail account.
  2. Open the message and view its headers. Headers are hidden lines that show the path of the email.
  3. Look for the name of the filter service in the path.

If it fails, open a support ticket.

Quick recap

  • SpamExperts is a third-party mail filter.
  • The outgoing filter checks mail leaving your server.
  • Get the hostname and port from Hostvento support.
  • Set it as a smarthost or as your SMTP server.
  • Test with an email and note the old settings first.
