Web Hosting and Domain Name: Common Questions

New to websites? This page answers the most common beginner questions about web hosting and domain names in plain words.

What is web hosting?

Web hosting is a rented space on a powerful computer called a server. The server is always switched on and connected to the internet. Your website files live there, so people can visit them any time. It is like renting a shop in a busy market.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the address of your website, such as example.com. People type it into a browser to find you. It is like the street address of your shop.

Do I need both?

Yes, in most cases. The domain is the address. Hosting is the building. An address with no building shows nothing. A building with no address is hard to find.

What is DNS?

DNS is like a phone book for the internet. It turns your domain name into the number of the server where your site lives.

What are nameservers?

Nameservers are the computers that hold your DNS information. They tell browsers where your site lives. Your welcome email lists the ones to use for your hosting.

How long does a domain change take?

Changes to nameservers or DNS can take a few hours. Sometimes they take up to 48 hours to reach everyone. This waiting time is called DNS propagation.

What is an SSL certificate?

SSL is a small digital file that locks the link between your visitors and your site. Secure sites start with https:// and show a padlock.

What is a control panel?

A control panel is a web page where you manage hosting with buttons. You can add email, upload files and more. A common one is cPanel.

How do I make a professional email address?

  1. Log in to your control panel.
  2. Open Email Accounts.
  3. Click Create.
  4. Choose a name, like hello, and a strong password.

Your new address will look like hello@yourdomain.com.

What is a backup?

A backup is a spare copy of your website. If something breaks, you can bring it back. Take one before big changes.

My site is down. What do I do?

  1. Check your internet connection.
  2. Try the site on your phone using mobile data.
  3. Check that your domain and hosting are active in the client area.
  4. If it is still down, open a support ticket.

Where can I find prices, plans and rules?

Please check your client area or ask Hostvento support. This page does not list prices or policies.

Tip: Keep your login details and welcome email in a safe place. You will need them often.
