What is a TLD?

A domain name is the address of a website. In example.com, the .com part is the TLD. TLD means top-level domain. It is the very last piece after the final dot.

Think of a big library. The TLD is the section, like Fiction or Science. The name before it is the book.

Main types of TLDs

TypeWhat it isExamples
Generic (gTLD)Open to most people.com, .net, .org
Country code (ccTLD)Linked to a country or place.uk, .in, .de
Sponsored (sTLD)Run for a special group, with rules.edu, .gov
New gTLDsNewer, topic-based endings.shop, .blog, .online

What do the common ones mean?

  • .com was meant for commercial sites. Today anyone uses it.
  • .org was meant for organizations and charities.
  • .net was meant for networks and tech.
  • .edu is for schools and colleges that qualify.

Who looks after TLDs?

An organization called ICANN oversees the system. Each TLD has a registry, a company that runs it. A registrar is a shop where you buy a domain under that TLD.

How to choose a TLD

  1. Pick .com if you want the most familiar choice.
  2. Pick a country TLD if you serve one country.
  3. Pick a topic TLD if it describes your site well, such as .shop for a store.
  4. Keep the name short and easy to spell.
  5. Check that the TLD has no special rules you cannot meet. Some country TLDs need a local address.
Tip: You can buy more than one TLD for the same name. This stops others from copying your name. Ask Hostvento support or check your client area for which TLDs you can register.

Does the TLD change my ranking?

For most sites, the TLD alone does not decide how high you appear in search results. Good content matters more. Country TLDs can help show your site to people in that country.

Quick recap

  • The TLD is the last part of a domain, after the final dot.
  • Types include generic, country code and sponsored.
  • .com is the most common, but others may suit you better.
  • Choose a short, clear name with a fitting TLD.
