What is an EPP code?
A registrar is a company that sells and manages domain names. An EPP code is a special password that proves you own a domain. It is also called an authorization code, auth code, transfer key or transfer code.
Think of it like a key to your house. You hand it to the new owner of the lock, so they know the move is allowed.
The code is usually a mix of letters, numbers and symbols.
When do you need it?
- When you transfer a domain from one registrar to another.
- For most common domain endings such as .com, .net and .org.
Some country domains work differently and may use other steps. Ask support if unsure.
Before you ask for the code
- Check that your contact email on the domain is correct. The code may be sent there.
- Check that the domain is unlocked. A lock stops transfers and protects you from theft.
- Check that the domain is not newly registered or newly transferred. Many domains cannot move in the first 60 days.
- Check that your domain is not expired.
How to get the code
- Log in to the place where your domain is registered.
- Open the domain list and select your domain.
- Look for Registrar Lock and turn it off.
- Look for Get EPP Code, Auth Code or Transfer Code.
- Click it. The code shows on screen or arrives by email.
If your domain is with Hostvento, log in to the client area, open Domains and look under your domain's management page. If you cannot find it, open a support ticket.
How to use the code
- Start a transfer at the new registrar.
- Type your domain name.
- Paste the EPP code when asked.
- Pay if the new registrar asks for it.
- Approve the transfer by email if you receive a message.
Quick recap
- The EPP code is a secret password for moving a domain.
- Unlock the domain, then request the code.
- Give the code to the new registrar to start the transfer.
- Keep it private.
