What is a domain alias?
A domain alias is like a nickname. Imagine a person with two names who answers to both. If you own mybrand.com and mybrand.net, an alias makes both open the same site. Visitors who type either name arrive at your site.
Before you start, you need the second domain name. Also, it must point to your hosting. That means its DNS must be set. DNS is like a phone book for the internet. It tells browsers where a domain lives. If you use Hostvento nameservers for the second domain, check your welcome email for the nameserver names, or ask support.
Steps
- Log in to Plesk.
- Click Websites & Domains.
- Find the main domain and click Add Domain Alias. In some versions, open the domain first and look for Domain Aliases.
- Type the alias name in the box, for example
mybrand.net. - Choose your options:
- Synchronize DNS zone with the primary domain: copies the main domain's DNS records.
- Mail service: lets email to the alias reach your mailboxes.
- Web service: shows your website on the alias.
- Redirect with HTTP 301 code: sends visitors to the main address in their browser bar. This is good for search engines.
- Click OK.
Test it
- Wait a short time. DNS changes can take a few hours.
- Type the alias name in your browser.
- Your site should open.
Remove an alias
- Open your domain and click Domain Aliases.
- Tick the alias.
- Click Remove.
This does not delete your site. It only removes the extra name.
Tip: Use the 301 redirect if you want only one main address. Two addresses with the same content can confuse search engines.
