How to upload files in cPanel and allow larger uploads

This guide shows how to upload files to your hosting with cPanel, and what to do when a file is too big.

What is cPanel?

cPanel is a control panel. A control panel is a web page where you manage your hosting. File uploads in cPanel work with a tool named File Manager. It is like the files app on your computer, but for your website.

Your hosting may use cPanel or Plesk. Your welcome email shows which one you have. In Plesk, use the File Manager under Websites & Domains.

Upload a file

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. In the Files section, click File Manager.
  3. Open the folder where the file should go. For your main site, this is usually public_html.
  4. Click Upload in the top bar. A new tab opens.
  5. Click Select File, or drag files into the box.
  6. Wait until the bar shows 100%.
  7. Click Go Back to return to File Manager.
  8. Click Reload to see the new file.

If a file with the same name is already there, you can tick the option to overwrite it. Careful: this replaces the old file. Back up first if it matters.

If a file is too big

PHP limits the size of uploads on websites, such as in WordPress. Two settings matter: upload_max_filesize and post_max_size. Raise both. The second should be equal to or bigger than the first.

  1. In cPanel, look for MultiPHP INI Editor in the Software section.
  2. Choose Basic Mode.
  3. Pick your domain.
  4. Raise upload_max_filesize, for example to 64M.
  5. Raise post_max_size to the same value or more.
  6. Click Apply.

If you do not see this tool, ask Hostvento support to raise the limit for you.

For very large files

Use an FTP program for big uploads. FTP is a way to send files to a server. Your welcome email has the details you need to connect.

Tip: Zip many small files into one archive, upload it, and then use Extract in File Manager. It is faster.
