What is a user role?
A user role is a list of allowed actions. It is like a school badge. A badge for a teacher opens more doors than a badge for a visitor. In Plesk, you give each helper a role. The role sets what they may see and change.
See your roles and users
- Log in to Plesk.
- Click Users in the left menu.
- The Users tab lists the people. The User Roles tab lists the roles.
Change what a role can do
- Open the User Roles tab.
- Click the name of the role.
- Tick or untick the permissions. Permissions are grouped into tabs, such as websites, mail, files and databases.
- Click OK.
Everyone with that role gets the change at once.
Give a user a different role
- Open the Users tab.
- Click the user's name.
- Find the User role list and pick another role.
- Click OK.
Stop a person from logging in
- Open the Users tab.
- Click the user's name.
- Switch off the option that allows the account to be active, or untick the option to allow login, if you see it.
- Click OK.
This is better than deleting the user if the person may return later.
Delete a user or a role
Warning: deleting is permanent. If a role is removed, users who had it lose their access. Move them to another role first.
- Tick the box next to the user or role.
- Click Remove.
- Confirm.
Good habits
- Give only the access a person needs.
- Check the user list every few months.
- Remove people who no longer work with you.
- Never share one login among several people.
Tip: Name roles by job, such as "Designer" or "Email helper". It makes them easy to pick later.
If you do not see these menus, ask Hostvento support whether they are on your plan.
Quick recap
- Open Users to see people and roles.
- Edit a role to change what its users may do.
- Switch a user to another role in the user's settings.
- Move users first before you delete a role.
