What is FTP?
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is a way to copy files from your computer to your server. Think of it as a delivery truck for files. You use a small program called an FTP client. FileZilla is a popular free one.
What you need
- An FTP client installed on your computer.
- Your host name, user name and password. Find them in your welcome email, or ask Hostvento support.
Steps
- If you need a new FTP account, log in to Plesk and click Websites & Domains. Then click FTP for your domain.
- Click Add FTP Account. Type a user name and a strong password.
- Set the Home directory. This is the folder the user can reach. Leave it as the main folder for your site.
- Click OK.
- Open FileZilla. At the top, type the Host, Username and Password.
- Use port
21in the Port box. If your server supports a secure type called SFTP, use that with port22. - Click Quickconnect.
- On the left side you see your computer. On the right side you see the server.
- On the right, open the folder named
httpdocs. This is the folder that shows your website to visitors. - On the left, find your website files. Drag them into the right side.
- Wait until the transfer finishes. Check the bottom panel for failed files.
- Visit your site in a browser to see your changes.
Tip: Your home page file should be called
index.html or index.php. Put it straight inside httpdocs, not in a sub folder.If it does not connect
- Check the user name and password for typing mistakes.
- Check that the host name is correct.
- Try passive mode in your FTP client settings.
- Open a support ticket if it still fails.
