What does "connect" mean?
A domain name is your website's address, like example.com. Your hosting is where your website files live. These are two separate things, often bought in different places. To link them, you tell the domain where the hosting is. This uses DNS. DNS is the internet's phone book. It turns a website name into a number that computers understand.
There are two ways. You can change the name servers, or you can change the A record. A name server is a computer that holds the DNS records for your domain. An A record is one line that links your domain to a server's IP address, which is the number address of a server.
Option 1: use name servers
- Find the name servers for your hosting in your welcome email. They look like
ns1.something.com. Ask Hostvento support if you cannot find them. - Log in to the company where you registered the domain.
- Open the domain's settings and look for Name Servers or DNS.
- Choose to use custom name servers.
- Type the name servers from your welcome email.
- Click Save.
If you registered the domain with Hostvento, log in to the client area, open Domains, and choose the domain to change its name servers.
Option 2: use an A record
- Find the server IP address in your welcome email.
- Open the DNS zone editor at your domain company.
- Edit the A record for the main domain, and for
www. - Type the IP address as the value and save.
Add the domain to your hosting
The hosting must also know the domain. In cPanel, use Domains or Addon Domains. In Plesk, use Add Domain. Without this step, visitors may see a default page.
Wait and test
Changes can take from a few minutes up to a day or more to spread. Open your site in a private browser window to check.
