What is the skeleton directory?
A skeleton directory is a folder of template files. When you create a new hosting account, the server copies everything from this folder into the new account. It is like a school giving each new student the same starter pack.
The folder is named /root/cpanel3-skel. WHM is the control panel for resellers and server owners. cPanel is the panel for each website owner. The skeleton directory works with WHM and cPanel. Root access is needed to change the folder, so this usually fits VPS and dedicated servers. On reseller hosting, ask Hostvento support if it is available to you.
What can you put in it?
- A starter
index.htmlpage inpublic_html. - A
.htaccessfile with your usual rules. - A
robots.txtfile. - Default folders such as
public_html/images. - A custom error page.
Only new accounts get these files. Old accounts do not change.
Steps
- Log in to the server as root, using SSH. SSH is a safe way to send typed commands to a server.
- Go to the skeleton folder:
cd /root/cpanel3-skel
This moves you into the template folder.
- Look inside:
ls -la
This lists every file, including hidden ones.
- Add your own files. For example, put a starter page inside
public_html:
nano public_html/index.html
This opens a simple text editor. Type your page, then press Ctrl+O, Enter and Ctrl+X to save and leave.
- Create a test account in WHM with Create a New Account.
- Open the new account's File Manager and check that your files are there.
Warning: Do not delete the default files in the skeleton folder unless you know what they do. A mistake can affect every new account. Take a backup of the folder first.
Quick recap
- The skeleton directory holds template files for new accounts.
- It lives at
/root/cpanel3-skel. - Add files, then create a test account to check.
- Existing accounts are not changed.
