What is WHMCS?

WHMCS is billing software. Hosting companies and resellers use it to sell plans, send invoices and manage customers. When you place an order, it checks many things. If one check fails, it shows an error. The full message often continues with a reason, such as "An order cannot be created without a product" or similar. Read the whole line, because it tells you the cause.

Common causes

  • The product or domain you picked is hidden or retired.
  • No payment method is set up.
  • A required field is empty.
  • A promo code is not valid.
  • A domain name is already taken or not allowed.
  • The cart session has expired.

If you are a customer

  1. Refresh the page and try again.
  2. Empty your cart and start the order again.
  3. Check that every box on the form is filled in correctly.
  4. Remove any promo code and try again.
  5. Try a different web browser or a private window.
  6. If it still fails, open a support ticket. Add the full error text and what you tried to order.

If you run your own WHMCS

  1. Log in to the WHMCS admin area.
  2. Go to System Settings, then Products/Services. Open the product and check it is not hidden or set to retired.
  3. Go to Payment Gateways and make sure at least one is active.
  4. Check Currencies. The product needs prices in the currency in use.
  5. Open Domain Pricing if the order has a domain. Check the extension is listed and has a price.
  6. Look under Utilities, then Logs, then Activity Log for clues.
  7. Turn on error display in your PHP settings only for a short time to see more detail.

Warning: Take a backup of the WHMCS files and database before you change settings.

Tip: Clear the template cache in Utilities if you changed order form templates. Old caches can cause odd errors.

Quick recap

  • Read the whole message to find the cause.
  • Customers: retry, remove promo codes and contact support.
  • Owners: check product, gateway, currency and domain pricing.
  • Back up before changes.
