Fix "Your connection is not private" in Google Chrome

Chrome shows this warning when it does not trust a site's security. This guide covers fixes for visitors and for site owners.

SSL and Security2 min read14 steps

What does it mean?

Websites use SSL to lock the link between you and the site. SSL uses a certificate, which is a digital ID card for the site. When Chrome cannot trust that card, it stops you and shows "Your connection is not private". The error code under it, such as NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID, tells you why.

If you are a visitor

  1. Reload the page. Sometimes it is a short glitch.
  2. Check your computer's date and time. A wrong clock is a very common cause. Fix it and reload.
  3. Open the page in a private (Incognito) window. If it works, a browser add-on or cache is the problem.
  4. Clear the cache. Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete, choose cached images and files, and click Clear data.
  5. Turn off any VPN, antivirus web shield or proxy for a moment and try again.
  6. Avoid public Wi-Fi that asks you to log in. Open the login page first.
  7. If you only see it on one site, do not enter passwords or card details on it.

Warning: do not click Proceed (unsafe) on sites that ask for passwords or money.

If you own the site

  1. Log in to cPanel and open SSL/TLS Status.
  2. Check that your domain has a valid certificate that has not expired.
  3. If it is missing or expired, click Run AutoSSL or install a new certificate.
  4. Check that the certificate covers both example.com and www.example.com.
  5. Make sure the CA bundle is installed. The bundle links your certificate to a trusted company.
  6. Do not use a self-signed certificate on a public site. Browsers do not trust it.
  7. Wait a few minutes after any change and test in a private window.
