Why Do I Need a Private SSL Certificate?

A private SSL certificate is one that belongs only to your own domain. This guide explains why that matters.

What is an SSL certificate?

An SSL certificate is like an ID card for your website. It locks the data that moves between your visitors and your site. It turns on the padlock and the https address.

What do "private" and "shared" mean?

A shared SSL certificate is one that covers many sites at once, such as the server's own name. Your site may use it by a special address. A private (or dedicated) SSL certificate is issued for your domain name only. Visitors see your name on it, not someone else's.

Do not mix this up with a private key. The private key is a secret file that goes with every certificate. You must never share it.

Why a private certificate helps

  • Trust. Visitors see your own domain on the certificate. That feels safer.
  • No warnings. A shared certificate used on your domain name does not match it. Browsers then show a "not private" warning.
  • Online shops. If you take payments or logins, you need your own certificate to protect that data.
  • Search engines. Search engines like secure sites. HTTPS is a small ranking signal.
  • Control. You can pick the type, the length of time and the details.
  • Email and apps. Some mail programs and apps check that the name matches your domain.

Do all sites need one?

Yes, nearly every public site should have HTTPS. Even a simple blog should. Browsers mark sites without it as "Not secure".

How to get one

  1. Log in to your client area at https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php.
  2. Open your hosting service and check the control panel for an SSL option, such as SSL/TLS Status in cPanel.
  3. If a free certificate can be issued for your domain, run that option.
  4. If you want a paid certificate, ask Hostvento support about the choices on your plan.
  5. Once installed, open your site and check for the padlock.
Tip: Certificates expire. Check the end date now and then, or use automatic renewal if it is offered.

Quick recap

  • A private certificate is issued for your own domain.
  • It builds trust and avoids browser warnings.
  • It protects logins and payments.
  • Ask support if you are not sure which option your plan has.
