What is Node.js?
Node.js lets you run JavaScript on a server, not only in a web browser. Many modern apps and tools use it, such as chat apps and website builders. A server needs Node.js installed before it can run them.
Newer cPanel versions can handle Node.js apps through a feature called Application Manager. It needs a few things installed first. Those come from EasyApache 4, the cPanel tool that installs web server parts. The steps below use that.
Install through WHM
- Log in to WHM as
root. - Search for EasyApache 4 and open it.
- Click Customize next to your current profile.
- Click Additional Packages in the left list.
- Use the search box and type nodejs.
- Switch on the Node.js versions you want, for example one named
ea-nodejsfollowed by a number. - Click Next until you reach the review page.
- Click Provision.
- Wait until it finishes. This can take a few minutes.
Warning: Provisioning can restart your web server for a short time. Do it at a quiet time and take a backup first.
Also install the Ruby and Passenger parts if the page says Application Manager needs them. Passenger is a helper that runs apps behind Apache.
Check the install
- Log in with SSH. SSH is a safe way to type commands to your server.
- Run:
/opt/cpanel/ea-nodejs*/bin/node --version
This command prints the Node.js version. If you see a number such as v18.x or v20.x, it works. The folder name depends on the version you picked.
Use it in cPanel
- Log in to the cPanel account.
- Open Application Manager. Or look for Setup Node.js App.
- Click Register Application.
- Fill in the app name, path, URL and start file.
- Click Save.
The account must have the tool allowed in its feature list. Whether the menu is on your plan depends on your setup. Ask Hostvento support if you cannot see it.
Open a support ticket if you need help.
Quick recap
- Node.js runs JavaScript on the server.
- Install it with EasyApache 4 under Additional Packages.
- Test it by running the node version command.
- Use Application Manager in cPanel to run apps.
