How to Suspend and Unsuspend an Account in WHM

This guide shows you how to switch a hosting account off for a while, and how to switch it back on.

What does suspending mean?

Suspending an account is like putting a lock on a shop door. The shop and everything inside stay safe. But nobody can go in. The website stops loading, email stops working, and the owner cannot log in to cPanel. The files and data are not deleted.

People suspend accounts for late payment, rule breaks, or a hacked site.

Steps to suspend

  1. Log in to WHM.
  2. Type Manage Account Suspension in the search box.
  3. Click it to open the page. In some versions it is under Account Functions.
  4. Find the account. You can type the username or domain in the search box.
  5. Click Suspend next to it.
  6. Type a short reason in the reason box. This is for your own notes.
  7. Choose if you want to leave the account's FTP and other options alone. Read the labels on the screen.
  8. Click Suspend again to confirm.
Tip: You can also make a message appear to visitors. A suspended site usually shows a page that says the account is suspended.

Steps to unsuspend

  1. Open Manage Account Suspension again.
  2. Find the same account. Suspended accounts are marked.
  3. Click Unsuspend.
  4. Wait for the green success message.

The site should work again within a minute or so.

Good to know

  • Suspending is safe. Terminating is not. Termination deletes the account.
  • If a customer pays late, suspend first and delete much later, if ever.
  • If you use a billing system like WHMCS, suspend from there when you can, so both systems agree.
  • Tell the account owner before you suspend, unless there is a security problem.

If a Hostvento account was suspended and you do not know why, log in to the client area at https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php or open a ticket at https://secure.hostvento.com/submitticket.php.

Quick recap

  • Suspending locks an account but keeps all its data.
  • Use Manage Account Suspension in WHM.
  • Click Suspend with a reason, or Unsuspend to restore it.
