What Are SSH Root Access and RDP Access?

These are two ways to control a server from far away. This guide explains each in simple words.

What is a server?

A server is a computer that stays on all the time and holds websites. You do not sit in front of it. You connect to it over the internet.

What is SSH?

SSH stands for Secure Shell. It lets you type commands to a Linux server from your own computer. The connection is scrambled, so others cannot read it. It is like a private phone line to the server.

What is root access?

Root is the all-powerful user on a Linux server. Root can change anything, install anything and delete anything. Having root access means having full control. It is like holding the master key to a building.

Warning: root can delete data or break the server with one wrong command. Take a backup before big changes.

What is RDP?

RDP stands for Remote Desktop Protocol. It is used with Windows servers. It shows the server's screen on your computer. You can click, open folders and run programs as if you sat at it. The full-control user on Windows is usually called Administrator.

Steps to connect with SSH

  1. Find the server IP and root password in your welcome email.
  2. Open a terminal. On Windows 10 or 11, use PowerShell or Command Prompt.
  3. Type the command below, using your own IP.
ssh root@your-server-ip

This starts a secure login as root.

  1. Type the password when asked. Nothing shows while you type. This is normal.

Steps to connect with RDP

  1. On Windows, press the Windows key and type Remote Desktop Connection.
  2. Open it and enter the server IP.
  3. Click Connect.
  4. Enter the username and password from your welcome email.
Tip: Use strong passwords and never share them. Ask Hostvento support if you cannot find your details.

Quick recap

  • SSH controls Linux servers with typed commands.
  • Root is the all-powerful Linux user.
  • RDP shows the desktop of a Windows server.
  • Both give strong control, so use them with care.
